Australia–EU Wine Deal Delivers Tariff Relief

While the agreements secure improved market access for Australian exporters into Europe, they also formalise the long-debated compromise over the use of the name Prosecco.

Under the arrangements, Australian producers will retain the right to use Prosecco as a grape variety name in the domestic market, but it will be protected as an EU geographical indication in export markets. Australian wineries exporting to Europe will therefore have 10 years from the agreement’s entry into force to phase the name off labels.

The outcome resolves a contentious issue that has been at the centre of negotiations with the European Union, which recognises Prosecco as a protected geographical indication linked to Italian production.
