Interview: Langtons is looking to grow Italian wine in Australia. Here’s why

Recently, Langtons Fine Wine hosted a masterclass deep diving into the complex world of premium Italian red wine.

This covered a broad range of regions, from nebbiolo in the far north in Piedmont, to grenache at the opposite end on the island of Sicily.

Speaking with Drinks Trade after the session, Langtons’ Head of auctions and masterclass host Michael Anderson says the goal is to introduce new rungs in the broader journey of Australian wine drinkers:

“In Australia, looking at 30-40 years' worth of data, we see that people buy a lot of high-alcohol, big shiraz/cabernet; then they move somewhere like Bordeaux, where it's a like-for-like grape, so cabernet again; and then they go on to Burgundy, because it's lower alcohol, lighter, and more approachable in that space. But within all that, you can duck off and do Italy, or you can duck off and do other areas as well. We see Italy as something that's really picking up.”
