Despite backlash, wine and spirits bottles added to WA CDS Scheme

Western Australia’s container deposit scheme, Containers for Change, has been extended to include wine and spirit bottles from today, Wednesday 1 July.

The extension comes in spite of backlash from the state’s wine sector regarding the disadvantage it will cause the 350+ producers when compared to the other states where extensions are not scheduled to be introduced until 2027.

Friends of WA Wine, the coalition formed to lobby against the proposed changes, estimates a $1.15 to $1.25 increase in the actual cost of every bottle of wine purchased in Western Australia, driven by the complex layering of the WET and GST taxes coupled with added administrative, logistics and labelling costs.
