How climate change is reshaping the identity of Vinhos Verdes
Climate change is having a major impact on winemaking, none more so than in regions such as Vinhos Verdes whose reputation rests on freshness, moderate alcohol and vibrant acidity. But with 45 authorised grape varieties across nine sub-regions, this Portuguese wine region is in a strong position to adapt, argues Leona De Pasquale. She discovers that, as producers adapt to warmer growing conditions – by rediscovering old vineyards, reviving neglected grape varieties and embracing a broader range of wine styles – so Vinhos Verdes is becoming more diverse and resilient as a result.
