How Viña Concha y Toro is riding a wave of supple, elegant wines
Gastronomic is the name of the game for Chile’s top winemaker Viña Concha y Toro, which has been hosting a series of select wine pairing events across the globe. At a fine wine portfolio tasting in London’s Sucre restaurant in Soho, the Chilean colossus unashamedly presented only its top-end wines. These include the celebrated Don Melchor 2022 retailing at around £125 a bottle as well as a first taste of the Don Melchor DM/01, the producer's first foray into the 'cru concept'. Victor Smart went along and was bowled over by just how approachable these high-end Chilean offerings are, but argues that surely such prestigious wines should be judged on their own merit and not constantly referred back to wines of the 'Old World'.
