Mattawa winery recovering after massive fire engulfs facility

MATTAWA, Wash. -- A Washington winemaker is recovering after a fire severely damaged an important facility and ruined millions of gallons of wine on Tuesday.In the afternoon of May 5, several emergency response agencies in Grant County responded to a reported fire at a wine production facility on State Route 243 near Mattawa. Firefighters arrived to find the Central Washington Wine Production Group and Upwest Wine Tasting Room on fire, and jumped to put out the flames.Grant County Sheriff’s Office officials said 4.5 million gallons of wine were destroyed in the fire, but no injuries to people were reported.Staff with Central Washington Wine said the loss of the facility has been devastating, but they are grateful for the response from emergency personnel. They also expressed gratitude to employees at the scene who tried to contain the fire before emergency services arrived.
